Yahoo Domains - Thoughts From A Happy Customer

Yahoo Domains is great. I have had an amazing experience using Yahoo
to register and maintain my dot com domain name. Before I had my
website, I was looking at the elements I needed to get started and
wanted to make all of the best selections in terms of the best

I did not want to cut any corners so I did my research before I chose

Computers and high-speed Internet access mean new, better-paying
choices for people who want the flexibility and convenience of careers

LiveOps, a Palo Alto, Calif., call center that hired people to work
out of their own homes.

Within two years, she was earning about $2,000 a month working 30 to
35 hours a week from her home in Columbia, Md. — about what she'd made
previously as a counselor. Her shifts can be as short as 30 minutes,
although she typically works five-hour blocks while her 6-year-old is
in school, plus some nights and weekends when her husband, a certified
public accountant, can take over child care.

Opara said she still faces the challenges familiar to every working
parent: how to work enough hours, spend enough quality time with her
family "and still figure out how I'm going to clean my house, make
dinner and do the grocery shopping." Not having to commute or pay for
child care, however, are big bonuses.

"It's fit in perfectly," Opara said, "and we also like the flexibility."

Technology is opening up new opportunities for parents and others who
want to work at home. Finding and landing legitimate, profitable work
still isn't easy, but here are a few venues to try:

A call center in your home
In recent years, you've heard a lot about companies routing their
customer-service calls to workers overseas, but a less-noticed trend
is the growth in home-based call-center workers.

Thanks to the Internet and better call-routing technology, more
companies are finding they can outsource their order-taking, sales and
problem-solving calls to home-based workers, said LiveOps board member
Bill Trenchard. LiveOps not only runs an outsource operation,
Trenchard said, but it also provides technology for companies that
want to set up their own home-based call centers.

Home-based workers tend to be better educated and more loyal than
their counterparts at traditional call centers, according to
Trenchard. Most of LiveOps' workers have college degrees — Opara has a
master's — and turnover is low.

The flexibility that Opara likes also benefits companies. Home-based
operators are typically contractors who are paid for each minute spent
on the phone, so companies can quickly gear up to meet high demand
without having to pay for idle workers during slack times.

The job isn't without drawbacks. Pay usually starts around $8 an hour,
assuming you get enough calls, which can come slowly at the beginning,
Opara said. The jobs that simply require taking orders often pay the
least, while the better-paying jobs typically require that you have
sales skills.

Call centers usually have no tolerance for audible distractions, so a
crying baby, barking dog or ringing doorbell could get you fired.
(Some companies require their workers have dedicated offices with
doors to minimize potential distractions.) An operator also needs a
dedicated phone line, a computer and high-speed Internet access.

Paul and Alison Martin, who met while they were students at Stanford
University, decided to launch a Web-based baby-product business
shortly after the birth of their twins, Ainsley and Sierra. The couple
launched Noss Galen Baby in February 2004, just before Paul graduated.

By May 2005, Paul said, the site was profitable enough to support the family.

The Martins had some distinct advantages. Paul had programming and
start-up experience from a stint at PayPal, so he built and maintains

application, in which case you should simply follow the directions,
and there is very little management required on your part. However,
many applications require you to download the software and then
install it locally. The following four steps will help you efficiently
manage the download process:

Download folder. If you don't already have one, create a folder called
Download Files (or something similar) and store it on your desktop.
Download software. Download the software into your Download Files
folder (see tips below).
Decompress. Open up Download Files and double-click the downloaded
file. One of two things will happen:

It starts up an install program, in which case follow the directions
to install the software.

It decompress a folder of files, in which case look for a file called
"Readme", and if there is one then double-click it and read it. Then
look for the startup file, usually called "setup", or "install",
double-click it, and follow the directions to install the software. If
your system needs help decompressing the file, try using the WinZip or
Stuffit applications.
Delete. When the installation is finished, unless you want to save the

Downloading evolved with Metalink

Anyone who has tried downloading a popular software or Linux
distribution on or just after release day, knows of the pain of the
phrase "connection timed out"�. Getting the software can be quite a
struggle, despite all the mirrors and BitTorrent Samaritans. Anthony
Bryan's Metalink is an open standard that makes downloading easier,
faster, and more reliable by helping users extract the last drop of
juice out of their connection.

I emailed a set of questions to Bryan to understand what separates
Metalink from other run-of-the-mill download accelerators and listen
in awe as he explains how Metalink combines traditional HTTP and FTP
methods of downloading files along with BitTorrent.

Mayank Sharma: Let's begin with the traditional what is question --
what is Metalink? Is it another way to download "stuff"?

Anthony Bryan: Yep, Metalink is a way to download "stuff." But it's
not a new transfer protocol like FTP or P2P method. It attempts to
make the traditional download process simpler by automating advanced
features and hiding complexity where possible. It's something that
download programs like Web browsers, FTP programs, download managers,
and P2P clients support. Information about the files to be downloaded
is stored in a simple XML file with a .metalink extension.

MS: So how exactly is using a metalink beneficial over other
traditional methods of downloading?

AB: In general, it should be easier and be error free. It can also be
much faster. The information a download program would need is in a
machine-processable format in the .metalink file, stuff like all the
different ways to download a file (from multiple mirrors to P2P) and
other things like the priority and geographical location of the
mirrors, checksums, publisher, license, OS, language, etc. More the
information, more the things that can be done!

So, instead of a single link to a file, you have many links. This
means higher availability. If many servers are down or very busy (like
on a release day), your download program can automatically check links
and see which ones are good. You don't have to manually gather and
check each link. This improves usability. Some programs can use the
multiple links to download different parts or segments of a file from
many places, which is called multi-source downloading. Usually, your
download will be much faster, but that all depends on your connection.
A single source download usually can't offer as fast download speeds.

Metalinks can also contain checksums or repair information to fix
corrupted downloads, either files downloaded with other programs or
repairing the download in progress. You can repair downloads with
rsync and some P2P, but with Metalink you can do it over regular
FTP/HTTP.

These benefits are mainly seen in large downloads like ISO files
(CD/DVD images), which can range from 500 MB to 4 GB or larger. Time
is money and sometimes you need things downloaded before you can get
work done. If there was an error in one of these files, it could be
painful to need to re-download it. This could be very helpful to movie
and music downloads, where (once this technology is included in
browsers) you'll be able to download huge files and recover from
errors, and download a whole album or multiple albums in one click,
within a browser and not some special application. For instance, when
you buy a bunch of albums on Bleep.com, you can download the files
individually or in an archive. The archive takes up resources on the
server and on your computer. With Metalink, you can list all the files
and have them added to a download queue in one click. This is also
useful for software like KDE that is available in multiple files.

MS: Whoa, those are some advantages. While it's good for the person
downloading, what about the person offering the download? Any reasons
why he should make a .metalink for his downloads?

AB: As we've already discussed, Metalink should offer your downloaders
an improved experience - more reliable and without errors.

This translates to cheaper bandwidth bills and support costs. Not very
exciting unfortunately, but something that needs to be done since it's
simple and can be automated. You can give different mirrors or P2P
sources a priority. If you list FTP/HTTP mirrors and P2P, the mirrors
can be used in case the person can't access P2P or if the file is no
longer on the P2P network. This can be handy in situations where a
business or university may block P2P because of copyright concerns or
that they don't want someone continuously uploading and using
bandwidth, or because of configuration issues with routers, etc. In
the end, you want people to be able to download whatever you are
distributing.

MS: Great! So how does one create a .metalink for their downloads?

AB: The easiest way to create a .metalink is with the Metalink Editor
which has a graphical interface. If you're going to be making a bunch,
you may want to use the automated tools which have a command line
interface or server tools which are meant to be run on mirrors. This
article on osresources details the non-graphical methods for .metalink
creation.

MS: Right. So do I need a special application to use a metalink
download? Won't it work with wget?

AB: Right now you do need a special application that supports reading
the .metalink file and using that info. Luckily, most download
managers support it right now, but no Web browsers natively. Support
in Opera and Firefox would make the benefits way more accessible to
regular people. wget doesn't support it yet, but aria2 is a similar
command-line program that does. The beauty of free and open source
software is that if people are interested enough, then support can be
added to a bunch of download programs quickly and easily.

MS: Do you track the number of projects using Metalink?

AB: Yes, mostly free and open source projects use it right now, but
some proprietary companies and game makes use it. OpenOffice.org,
openSUSE, cURL, Arch Linux, DesktopBSD, blag linux, StartCom Linux,
Berry Linux, PC-BSD, Linux Mint, Ubuntu Christian Edition, redWall
Firewall, GoboLinux, TrueBSD, PuppyLinux, UniProt Consortium, Eiffel
Software, and Ankama games have used Metalink.

MS: Any new feature Metalink users, both offering and downloading
stuff, should keep an eye out for?

AB: I view Metalink as basic infrastructure and hopefully it will get
to the point where people don't even know they are using it. Metalink
as it is now is Wave One (or maybe .5) of coming improvements. I think
we can build on it and offer some really cool things, which will again
work transparently for people. Not all clients support all the
features of Metalink, like using repair information - that's a really
important feature.

Phex is the first program with Metalink support that is primarily P2P
(other BitTorrent clients like aria2 and GetRight support it). You'll
be able to export your library, or parts of it. If you want to share
something with a friend, you can just email a .metalink or put it on a
server for download, and they'll get the same exact files since
they're identified with checksums. No weeding through search results
searching for similar files will be needed.

MS: Thanks for taking time out for the interview. Please share a
little information about yourself and your life outside of computers.

AB: I'm 29, just finished my Master's degree, and looking for work
related to Metalink with open source projects. :) I live in

What is Shareware, Trial Software and Freeware?

In the Mid 1980's Bob Wallace developed a word processor program
called PC-Write. To further describe his program, Wallace came up with
the term Shareware. Many users in the industry consider Jim Button,
the creator of PC-File - a database program, and Andrew Fluegelman,
the author of PC-Talk - a communication program, are considered to be
the "fathers" of the Shareware concept. However, the three of them
clearly established the Shareware model to be the viable marketing
method for their software.

In the early days of software distribution, it was a standard practice
to share computer programs across a global bulletin board system. This
allowed users to share and exchange them with other users that may
have a need for it to accomplish or simplify daily tasks. As the
progress of the software industry continued to develop, software
authors and vendors started to request small payments for their
software in order to help support continued improvements and offer
technical support of the software.

Computer software was distributed and shared between friends and
colleagues; however, it wasn't until the development of the Internet
and e-commerce, when the concept of Shareware really took off and
became more popular than one could have ever imagined.

As the Internet became more popular, so did the use of Shareware,
Trial Software and Freeware. In the early 90's the Internet lead to a
new software distribution model that revolutionized the software
industry and the way software was distributed. This new found method
of distribution has been so successful over the past 20 years, that
now almost every software development company uses it today to bring
about awareness of their software.

To make this network of Shareware and Freeware distribution even more
powerful, Webmasters began making Website archives based on the
software that was available to download. These massive libraries of
software are commonly known as software download sites.

What is Shareware?
So what exactly is Shareware? Shareware is software that is
distributed on a trial basis with the understanding by the users of
the software, that there may be a small charge by the author to
continue to use it. Most Shareware is delivered free of charge by
downloading it from the Internet; either from the authors Website or
from a software download site. By registering the software and paying
the small fee, you become registered with the author and you can
receive technical support and updates of the software when they become
available.

You can copy Shareware and pass it along to friends and colleagues, as
long as it is the trial version of the software and not the registered
version. They too are expected to pay a registration fee if they
intend on using the software regularly beyond the trial period.

The trial period of the computer software is entirely dependent on the
software author and can vary a great deal. Typically, the trial period
can be anywhere from 10 - 30 days or even 45 - 60 days. I have also
seen some software where the trial period was based on usage and only
allow you to use the program an X number of times. So there are many,

downloads of their programs. So now you have to make the decision to

look around a bit and see if there is any other software downloads out
there that may fit the bill.

Some of the places you can check to download software is the

When you have found the right software and you are ready to download,
the site you are visiting will more than likely have a download link
in which you can click on to start the software download process.
After you click on the software download link, a box will pop up and

is very important that you choose the Save option so that you can save
it to your computer in the place that you want, and so that you can
run it at a later time if you wish to. If you choose run, it will
download the file to a temporary folder and automatically start the
installation.

.exe file and it will start the installation process. Do understand
though that some of the software you download may also be in a .zip
file. A .zip file is a file that has been compressed to make it
smaller in size so that it is faster for you to download. In this case
you will need to have unzipping software installed on your computer to
unzip the file first, and they you can run the installation file
During the installation process, you will be asked questions as to
where you want to install the software, what program group you want to
add it to etc. Unless you have a personal preference where it
installs, I would suggest sticking with the default settings.

Once you are done installing, and depending on the software, you can
choose to have a desktop icon created so that you can simply click on
that to start the program. The desktop icon will allow you to quickly
start the program and save you the steps from hunting it down on the
Start menu.

The best place to start with your newly downloaded software is the
help file. The help file will walk you through the steps of using the
software, and many help files often have a Quick Start Guide included
so that you don't waste all your time reading and can start using the
software right away.

Removing Software
Once you've installed the software and decide that it's not quite what
you are looking for you can uninstall the software from your computer.
There are a few different ways you can do this.
First, and probably the easiest way to remove software from your
computer is to use the uninstall feature that is built into the
software. Typically, the uninstaller is installed as an option in your
program group. You can find this by clicking the Start > Programs >
Program group name > Uninstall.

If the software you installed doesn't have an uninstaller, you can use
the add/remove programs option in your control panel.

If you have a program that you like and decide to purchase it, you
should uninstall the demo version that you have on your computer.
Running two different versions can cause your program not to run

the story of terrifying and monstrous creatures both human and not and
the struggle to confine the malicious ones and protect the benign. The
show's success lead the Sci-Fi channel to pick it up for traditional
television broadcast. However, typical of the genre, sometimes the

Since its creation, web television has seen remarkable changes. Even

that sounds promising in Google, click on it and discover nothing but
ads. What is the purpose of such a site? Well, this practice of
putting up a site on the web without content is known as domain
parking, and can serve many purposes.

1. Later development - developing a web site takes time, and like any
business starts with a simple idea. Along with that idea, you have
discovered that the ideal domain name is available. You know that it
will be quite a few month before you can do anything, but you can't
let the desired URL slip through your fingers. Who's to say that it
will be available in six months? So you buy the name, and now it is
parked, just one simple page, online.
The company that you purchased the name through, the domain
registrants, will usually offer domain parking for free. But once the
page is developed, you will have to pay for hosting (with domain
registrant or another company). While parked, your page can be
monetized. Usually, this means ads by someone such as Google or Yahoo!
If anyone happens upon your parked domain, and clicks on an ad, you
make a little money. With a bit of research, you can find other ways
to monetize your web site with other types advertising and affiliate
links.

Now, here is the interesting part. I have a domain that I purchased a
year ago that I have done nothing with, I haven't even used domain
parking to pick up a little jingle. But, the company I purchased it
through has parked it, are advertising their services on it, and have
monetized it so THEY are making a little jingle from MY parked domain!
So, if you have to use domain parking for awhile before development,
make sure you are the one making the jingle. Also, post a sign saying
"Under Construction" or "Coming Soon" so that those who are interested
can check back later.

2. Redirection of Web traffic - Sometimes there are web addresses that
are similar to your own that you may want to purchase and then use
domain parking to redirect to your web site. For example, if you had
xyz.com, you may want to purchase xyz.net and then redirect all
traffic from that site to your .com domain. This type of domain
parking serves a purpose, they move you right on to the actual web
site, so are only a minor inconveniece if they do not move you on fast
enough.

3. Re-sale - Some people will buy a domain name for the sole purpose
of reselling it to someone else. While waiting for a buyer, they use
domain parking to make a little extra money, and to advertise the
domain as being for sale.

In the early days of the web, a lot of people purchased thousands of
domain names with the hope of reselling them at a later date for a
profit. Though the prime names are gone, there are still many people
who are holding onto domain names and hoping to resell them, some of
these names have gone for thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

This especially occurred in the early days of the web when domainers
purchased trademark names and then sold them for exorbitantly high
prices to the company. However, laws were eventually passed that
protect trademark names from this practice, which is referred to as
cybersquatting.

But when it comes to Search Engine Optimization, a key word domain
name is king, so these are hot names which, if not being used for a

Question 1

First off what is *.30.forumer.com IP? because the one that shows in
the Admin CP links me to a page that says "Server 1" and when I PING
server 30 for it's IP the IP it gives me takes me to a page that says
"Sever 15" so what is *.30.forumer.com IP address (see IPs I have used
below):

a) 69.64.49.67 (Ip given in Admin CP)- loads a page for server 1
b) 69.64.36.9 (Pinged IP for server 30)- loads a page for server 15

Question 2

How do I set my domain up with Yahoo?

I mean I am not transfering it so don't suggest that as I am not open
to it. I added both IP address and waited 24 hrs each time and when I
go to my address/doamin each IP address took me to some forumer page
for servers (1 & 15).

Not to mention Step 2 never showed up in the Admin CP even after
waiting 48hrs.

This is a big issue for me because I like editing the HTMl rather then
the Board Wrappers; but Invision_Free makes setting up a domain way
more faster and simpler. I have had no luck with forumer and all
support topics already made for Yahoo domains are not helpfule for 2
reasons:

a) No one helped the person
b) No one gave them an exact answer to their question

Rent control, seen by many economists as old-fashioned, has recently made a surprising comeback in one group of high-growth, dynamic economies – the Gulf.

In December 2007 Dubai’s government toughened up its 2005 Rent Law and reduced the maximum 2008 rent increase to only 5%. Abu Dhabi has likewise capped 2008 rent hikes at only 5%.

In neighboring Qatar, a rent freeze has been implemented while the government is determining the new rent increase cap. For the past two years to February 2008 rent increases were limited to 10% annually

In adopting rent control the Gulf has moved in the opposite direction to the rest of the world. Elsewhere, rent control regimes have generally been dismantled or softened since the mid-1990s.

Rent control has been removed in most of Eastern and Central Europe. Asia has also followed the trend: China, Japan, Malaysia and Singapore have lifted rent controls since the early 2000s.

The Gulf measures have dismayed landlords, and alarmed property investors.

In an extended research article, regimes in about 40 countries are reviewed by the Global Property Guide, an international research firm.

“We believe that rent control is generally harmful,” says Prince Christian Cruz, senior economist at the Global Property Guide.

“But rent control can be benign, if: 1.) it is implemented so that its market-restraining effects are modest; 2.) it helps to defuse public protest about high rents; and 3.) it assists landlords and tenants by providing an agreed framework for contracts,” he continues.

“Most of these conditions are not present in rent control measures in Qatar and UAE. If rent control persists in its current form, the property market boom might grind to a halt,” Cruz notes.

According to a study by economists Basu and Emerson, “he removal of rent control can not only increase efficiency in the rental market, but can also lead to a general lowering of rents, making all tenants better off.”

“Qatar and UAE can learn a thing or two from Canada,” says Cruz. “Although the laws appear to be pro-tenant, the system is not entirely disadvantageous to landlords. Allowable rent increases are based on each province’s CPI, allowing regional disparity,” he continues.

A landlord can usually petition for a rent increase above the "rent increase guidelines" set for the province. Landlords doing so have to apply to that province's rent authority. Landlord-tenant disputes are resolved by the provincial (small claims) court system, or through a tribunal/arbitration system. The system is very efficient.

UAE Buildings Without Power - Property Market in Crisis

Investors in the UAE property market have been facing some serious frustrations recently, particularly in the northern emirates of Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah and Umm ul Quwain. Ajman has been a particular destination of choice for many Pakistanis who have been attracted by the cheap off-plan property prices and the promise of a residence visa. Now that some of these projects have completed or are nearing completion, they have discovered that they get a 1 year visa which needs to be renewed EACH year at a cost of AED 1,500 (Rs.33000) and even worse, they may not have any electricity in the hot and humid desert climate for several years !!

Thousands of buildings are being constructed in the United Arab Emirates during the current development boom but they have neglected one serious development issue - ELECTRICITY !! Many brand new buildings that have already been completed, stand in darkness while the owners of the apartments in these buildings stand frustrated. Many moved in furniture and belongings expecting the electricity to be connected with a few days but theey are still waiting months later and it seems that the problem will not go away until 2012 at the earliest.

in Umm al Qaiwain, a Dh30-billion project by the Dubai-based developer Tameer, Al Salam City, was put on hold in May due to the shortage of electricity and water. The delay in such a high-profile project, which was believed to have been 70 per cent sold, was a major blow to the emirate.

Safeer Mall, in RAK, which was completed in June, and has the largest hypermarket in the region, remains empty due to the electricity crisis. A spokesman for the mall said they have lost all hope of solving the problem and businesses are starting to withdraw stock.

In RAK alone, 3,532 building permits have been issued. But up to 2,145 buildings in the emirate are still waiting to be connected with electricity, according to the municipality.

In entire districts of Ajman, brand new high-rise towers, finished to perfection, have stood empty for months. At night, occasional lighting powered by generators highlights the idle buildings.

Developers, unable to persuade the federal or municipal authorities to switch the power on, are watching investments running into millions of dirhams show no sign of producing the expected return.

Ajman has signed a $2bn agreement with the Malaysian power producer MMC to build the Gulf’s first coal-powered electricity plant. The project will not be ready until 2012.
It is unlikely that the energy crisis will be resolved before 2013.

Mr Shaban spent millions on setting up business in the Emirate and is now facing ruin and haveing to return to Egypt with nothing and says others are in comparable predicaments. “Many people bought a flat here. They may have bought it for Dh900,000 and now they have had to sell it for Dh500,000.”

Without power, he says, there can be “no life, no development ... you are nothing”.
“You can expect this to happen in other countries, but not the UAE,” he added. “How will the development of the city be achieved if all the business people leave? People are already saying there is no power in Ajman, so why are they still giving approval for the buildings?”

Many Pakistanis who invested in the property markets of Dubai, Ajman and Ras Al Khaimah are now dumping their properties at below their purchase prices and are trying to take out whatever they can of their investments. Postcodes in Brazil follow a nationwide scheme known as CEP (Código de Endereçamento Postal) (Postal Addressing Code) introduced in 1972 as a sequence of five digits. To keep mail services up with economic growth, a three-digit suffix was added in 1992.

Most cities with population around 100,000 and above have a CEP assigned to every public place and to some high-occupancy private spaces, like major commercial buildings and large residential condos. Most of the four digit numbers are allocated to small geographic areas, such as streets, urban communes or villages, although some are reserved for government use.

Due to the division of Cyprus, following the Turkish invasion in 1974, only the Greek-controlled Republic of Cyprus uses the post code system. Mail sent to to the Turkish-occupied area of Cyprus must instead be addressed to via Mersin 10, TURKEY via Mersin in southern Turkey.

The two British Sovereign Base Areas (or SBAs) of Cyprus are not part of the Republic of Cyprus, although the Cypriot villages within these areas use the Cyprus post code system. British military organisations and personnel use British Forces Post Office numbers, BFPO 57 for Akrotiri and BFPO 58 for Dhekelia.

These system of postal codes (PSČ, stands for Czech: Poštovní směrovací číslo). The postal code consists of five digits, usually written in the form XXX XX, with a space). Originally the first digit indicated a region: regional divisions have changed, but the codes have not. Thus the capital of the Czech Republic, Prague, is assigned codes starting with 1.

When writing the address, the postal code is put in front of the town name, e.g.:

Danish postal codes have four digits, except for five special purpose 3-digit codes. The self-governed territories of Greenland^[5] and the Faroe Islands have 4- and 3-digit codes, respectively.

New regulations add the country code DK to the postal codes, but in practice it is most often omitted.

Since 1971 Finland has used five-digit numeric postal codes. The first two digits designate the municipality or group of municipal small communities where it may be 5; codes ending in 1 are for post office boxes. Corporations receiving large amounts of mail may have an own postal code. The special postal code 99999 is for Korvatunturi, the place where Santa Claus (or Joulupukki in Finnish) is said to live.

France uses five-digit numeric postal codes, the first two digits representing the département in which the city is located. The département numbers were assigned alphabetically at the time of the French Revolution, but some later changes (such as renaming and splitting of départements) mean that the list is not completely in alphabetical order any more. The system is extended to french overseas departments and territories as well. Note that postcodes in both départements of Corsica commence with the "20" historically assigned to Corsica before it was split into two départements, which are now numbered 2A and 2B.

The last three digits identify a more precise location, 000 being in general reserved for the préfecture. However, in Paris, Lyon and Marseille, the last two digits indicate the arrondissement. For example, 80000 corresponds to Amiens which is the préfecture of the Somme or département 80, while 69008 corresponds to the 8^th arrondissement of Lyon.

Postal codes in Germany were introduced on July 25, 1941 in the form of a two-digit system that was applied initially for the parcel service and later for all mail deliveries. This system was replaced in 1962 in the Federal Republic by a four-digit system; three years later the German Democratic Republic followed with its own four-digit system.

Today, German postal codes are numeric, consisting of five digits since 1993, replacing the separate four-digit systems in place in West Germany and East Germany before 1990. Between 1990 and 1993 the old four-digit codes in the former West were prefixed with the letter "W", and in the former East with the letter "O" (for "Ost", east in German). Even though the western system had kept some number ranges free specifically for later integration of the East should reunification come, it was decided that the time was right to create an entirely new system in the 1990s, in which larger towns and cities would be divided up into multiple postal code areas (the old system had made inconsistent use of additional numbers after the city's name for this), and companies receiving a lot of mail (such as mail-order businesses) could get a private code assigned.

Hungarian postal codes are numeric, consisting of four digits. The first digit is for the postal region, as listed below (with the postal centre indicated after the number):

Not all of the above are county capitals: Hatvan, Sárbogárd and Szentendre are major cities, but not county capitals. They are, however, all well communicated cities and big junctions.

In Budapest postal codes are in the format 1XYZ, where X and Y are the two digits of the district number (from 01 to 23) and the last digit is the identification number of the post office in the district (there are more than one in each district). A special system exists for PO Box deliveries, which do not follow the district system. These special postal codes refer to a specific post office rather than an area. Ironically, the "1000" postal code designates the Countrywide Logistics Centre, which is currently located outside the 1000 region, in Budaörs, which is in the 2000 region.

The rest of the country is structured as follows:

County capitals are always designated a postcode ending with "00". However, some cities have postal codes ending on "00" without being a county capital.
Cities generally have postcodes ending with "0".
Smaller towns and villages have any other number.

Bigger cities were formerly divided into districts, which often lives on in postcodes. This can be confusing, as 3000 designates Hatvan, but 3001 doesn't designate District 1, but it is actually a PO Box postal code.

Aside from the Dublin postal districts, Ireland does not have a national post code system. While the national postal service, An Post, has stated that the addressing system and sorting technologies preclude the need for postcodes for mail delivery, it has been suggested that other services (such as ambulances) would benefit from a national system. In 2005, the Minister for Communications announced that postcodes would be introduced by 2008,^[7] but the project had been shelved pending additional consultation and investigation into the need.^[8] However, on February 24, 2008 The Sunday Times reported that the new Minister is finalising the system and hopes to bring the plans to cabinet before the summer of 2008 for introduction in 2009.^[9] The proposal was reported as being a six character alphanumeric system with examples given for Galway city as GAL 123 and for Maynooth as MYN 123, where the 123 part would be different for each specific address. It also seems to keep a link to the existing Dublin postal districts with an example given for D4 becoming D04 123. An Post was quoted as saying "it would be at the heart of the introduction".^[9]

Israeli post codes (Hebrew: מיקוד‎ – Mikud) are numeric and consist of five digits. They are assigned from north to south, thus, Metula in the north has 10292 as its postal code, and Eilat in the south was assigned 88xxx. The capital city of Jerusalem postal codes start with the digit 9, though this doesn't correspond with its geographical location. Each postal code corresponds to a mail carrier route or RR, thus, when the letters are sorted by the postal code, they are assigned to a specific carrier. Army unit postal codes start with a 0 and are not changed even if a unit is roaming.

Italian post codes are numeric, consisting of five digits, such as 20121 Milan. Created in 1967, they are commonly known as CAP (Codice di Avviamento Postale, i.e.: Postal Sending Code). A new postcode system has been introduced in New Zealand for all mail, unlike the old system, which was only used for mail sent in bulk. It has 1800 four-digit codes with a much finer granularity than the old codes, with each suburb and PostShop lobby having its own postal code. The first two digits specify the area, the third digit specifies the type of delivery (street, PO Box, Private Bag, or Rural delivery), and the last digit specifies the specific lobby, RD number, or suburb.

Postal codes in Nigeria are numeric, consisting of six digits. NIPOST, the Nigerian Postal Service, divides the country into nine regions, which make up the first digit of the code. The second and third digits, combined with the first, are the dispatch district for outgoing sorting. The last three digits are for delivery. The main postal head office in each region will have a postal code ending in 00001, such as, Garki Main HO in Abuja has the postal code 970001, Ikeja HO in Lagos has 100001, Lokoja in Kogi has 270001 and Port Harcourt has 500001. The lowest postcode being 100001 and the highest is 982002.^[12]

Since 18 March 1968 Norway has used a four-digit system: postnummersystemet. The numbers start at 00 and increase with the distance from the capital city Oslo. The highest post numbers are found in the county of Finnmark, near the Russian border, where they start with 95-99. The lowest post code in use is 0001 (0slo), the highest 9991 (Båtsfjord).

Pakistan's postal service utilizes sequences of five numbers, termed "Post Codes," to identify locations throughout the country. Usually, an entire "Tehsil" (geographical subdivision) has its own sequence, while larger cities may have codes specific to a single neighborhood. For instance, Lahore's Gulberg district uses 54660, while Lahore's Walton district uses 54750. Postage bound for either Bangladesh or India is only slightly more expensive than domestic rates, and is far less-expensive than normal international rates.^[13] Common postcodes can be found on the Pakistan Post website.

While neighbouring India has assigned an Indian "Postal Identification Number" prefix to Pakistan-Administered Kashmir, Pakistan in return has not reciprocated the gesture.^[14] India's postal service will not deliver mail to Pakistani-Administered Kashmir unless the Indian postal code and word "India" appears in the address, while Pakistan's postal service often refuses to handle mail that bears the word "India" on letter bound for Pakistani Kashmir. Hence, a complicated and unofficial system of delivery has evolved whereby most letters from India, or Indian-Administered Kashmir, that are bound for Pakistani Kashmir are actually sent to post-offices in Pakistan's Punjab province that are in close proximity to Pakistani Kashmir.^[15] Residents of Pakistani Kashmir will have notified the local Punjabi branch that they actually reside in Kashmir, but are simply maintaining a Punjabi postal address for convenience. Although it is illegal to do so, postal workers in those offices then unofficially forward the mail to post-offices in Pakistani Kashmir for pick-up. Important documents, on the other hand, are delivered to third parties in Dubai, who then re-address the mail to its destination in either Kashmir.

The term "ZIP code" is used by the Philippine Postal Corporation for postal codes. Unlike American ZIP codes, the Philippines' ZIP codes are four-digit numbers without any extensions. While the cities of Metro Manila use more than one code, towns and cities outside Metro Manila are assigned only one code per town or city.

In Poland, postal codes were introduced in 1973. They consist of five digits divided into two groups of two and three digits, with hyphen between them. The whole country has been divided into 10 large areas (not following the administrative divisions—at the time, Poland was divided into 17 voivodeships, then 49, now 16). Second and third digits are used to specify a particular area (originally the number of a regional sorting office, there was one in every county), and the last two are the number of a postal delivery branch.

Clients receiving particularly large volumes of mail may have their own unique postal codes, the same goes for PO Box lobbies of the largest post offices.

The Portuguese postal code (código postal) is formed by four digits, a hyphen, then three digits, followed by a postal location of up to 25 characters in capitals. This location is the name of the town, sometimes followed by a three-letter abbreviation of the municipality (e.g. 4455-111 Paradela VNB)

Postal codes are given at the building block level and also to designated addresses with high volumes of mail.

The first digit designates one of nine postal regions; the following two digits designate postal distribution centers; the fourth digit is 0 if it belongs to a capital of municipality, 5 if not, or any other digit if it is a designated address; the last three digits sort building blocks and designated addresses. The more important the city, the more rounded is the number formed by the first four digits.

The Republic of China government uses postal codes of three + two digits in Taiwan.^[19] There are 368 sets of three-digit codes for rural townships, urban townships, county-controlled cities, districts (Hsinchu City and Chiayi City have districts coded 300 and 600 respectively without three-digit subdivisions), and the uninhabited island groups of Pratas Islands, Spratly Islands, and Diaoyutai Islands (claimed by the ROC, currently controlled by Japan). Omitting the supplementary two digits is ordinarily acceptable, but a five-digit code will speed up the mail.

Thailand postcodes, introduced on 25 February 2525 B.E. (A.D. 1982), have 5 digits. The first two specify the province. The third and fourth digits specify a district (amphoe). The fifth digit, if 0, is the main delivering post office for that postal district; if non-zero, is a sub-post office (which receives but does not deliver mail) in that district. The district containing the provincial capital uses xx000 (e.g. Nakhon Ratchasima province codes are 30xxx, and Nakhon Ratchasima city district is 30000). Generally, each district has its own postcode, although some larger districts are split into two or more postcodes, and some districts share a code. In about half a dozen cases, postcodes overlap province boundaries, to include one or more sub-districts (tambon) that are more easily accessible from the neighbouring province.

UK postcodes are alphanumeric and between five and eight characters long (including a single space separating the outward and inward parts of the code), e.g. the code for the House of Commons is SW1A 0AA. These codes were introduced by the Royal Mail between 1959 and 1974. They have been widely adopted not just for their original purpose of automating the sorting of mail, but for many other purposes — see Postcode lottery.

The 'Outward' part of the postcode denotes the postal district - for example RH for the Redhill area, and then the following number distinguishes the post town - broadly speaking the Delivery Office which services the local area. So RH1 is Redhill itself, RH10 is Crawley. With larger towns there may be more than 1 number in the outward section - Crawley includes RH10 and RH11. The reverse situation is uncommon but can also occur, with a single postal district lying within more than 1 post town. The 'Inward' part denotes particular parts of the town / Delivery Office area, with the first part - the number - being a sector, and the final two letters denoting a group of houses within that area.

A series of five-digit codes may also be used on business mail. This is called Mailsort – but is only available for mailings of 'a minimum of 4,000 letter-sized items'.^[20] Discounts are available for such bulk mailings based on the type of mail and how pre-sorted it is.

The United States uses five-digit numeric "ZIP codes". Since 1983 the US Postal Service has promoted an extended version called "ZIP+4", which adds a hyphen and four additional digits following the main ZIP code, to identify a smaller geographical area or single large entity.

The Vatican City is integrated into the postcode system of Italy. It uses a five-digit numeric CAP of Rome (Codice di Avviamento Postale, i.e.: Postal Sending Code).
